Editor’s Note
Metro AG was the first to enter the B2B Wholesale Retailing concept in India in 2003. With its first store in Bangalore, the German retailer grew its business across the country. Walmart entered the B2B arena in association with the Bharti AirTel Group in 2009.
Over time, Walmart ceded its business to the erstwhile Future Group while Metro AG sold its India business to Reliance Retail. French Retail giant Carrefour which had entered India in 2009 also exited the country after a few years and is now back to pivot a different model.

The B2B retail model is a bit tricky to operate in the country. Focussed essentially on SMEs, the B2B retail model requires the buyer to furnish details such as a Corporate PAN, GST records, etc.
These are usually held by small businesses, including several thousand entrepreneurs, who in turn buy for their personal and family requirements.
Lawfully, these business models are indeed in the right spirit, though ethically there is a yellow line of distinction.
