Airport Retail has not taken off in India. Wonder why?

Travellers to Nethaji Subhash Chnadra Bose International Airport have a delectable snacking option at affordable prices, finally.

Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Central Minister for Civil Aviation inaugurated the UDAN Yatri Cafe at Kolkata Airport in association with Travel Food Services, India’s largest Airport F&B retailer.

The minister shared on his official LinkedIn page, “Making air travel more inclusive and accessible has always been at the heart of our efforts in the aviation sector. The launch of the UDAN Yatri Cafe at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata, is another step toward this mission.

This initiative by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Airports Authority of India is designed to offer travelers access to quality food at budget-friendly prices, he added.

The menu at the UDAN cafe reflects affordability of items sold such as

  • 100 ml Water Bottle @ 10
  • 100 ml Tea @ INR 10
  • 100 ml Coffee @ INR 10
  • A piece of Samosa @ INR 20
  • Sweet of the Day @ INR 20

The cafe ensures that no traveler feels left out or burdened, truly embodying the spirit of inclusivity and accessibility.

The UDAN Yatri Cafe is more than just a food outlet—it represents the Central Government’s mission to democratize the travel experience for the masses.

The Minister was in the capital city of West Bengal to commemorate the centenary of Kolkata Airport.

“As Civil Aviation Minister, I draw inspiration from the dreams and everyday struggles of the common man.

With every affordable cup of tea or snack, we reaffirm our belief in making air travel an experience that is both enriching and within reach of all”, the minister said.

“It is my heartfelt mission to make air travel a symbol of affordability, dignity, and comfort—an experience that every Indian can embrace with pride and joy”, he went on to add.

By breaking barriers and bridging aspirations, we aim to ensure that every citizen feels not just included, but celebrated, in the transformative journey of India’s aviation story.

We aim to expand the UDAN Yatri Cafe to airports across the nation, making it a hallmark of the transformative growth of India’s aviation sector.

Together, we are building a future where air travel is not just a mode of transportation but a celebration of progress for every Indian, summarised the Minister in his post.

Editor’s Note

It is the aspiration of every common Indian to take to the skies atleast once in their lifetime.

There are 150+ airports in service currently in India of which over a dozen are operated by Private Companies such as the Adani Group, GMR Group and Fairfax Holdings.

Kolkata and Chennai airports, which are among the top 6 airports in India continue to be operated by Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Operating food and snack outlets at such low prices is a boon to middle class Indian who otherwise dread the exorbitantly priced food items.
