Editor’s Note
The brand’s moment of triumph at the global arena came when India’s Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi wore a traditional dhoti from the brand during his tete a tete with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping in 2019.
The iconic meeting with the leaders was held at the backdrop of the Arjuna caves in Mahabalipuram near Chennai.
With a 40-year legacy, founded by KR Nagarajan and over INR 2,000 Cr in revenues, Ramraj Cotton employs over 50,000 people across its value chain – from weaving, sourcing, packing, distribution and retailing its products.
The company’s flagship store, located at the bustling shopping hub of Chennai in T. Nagar is said to have a daily turnover of INR 9 lakh, or INR 30 Cr a year!
The brand, which is synonymous with the category (of dhotis) has not just created a niche for itself, but has also made the humble dhoti once popularised by Mahatma Gandhi, as a style statement.
