FADA data confirms record all-round EV retail growth in August 2026, with electric two-wheelers crossing 2 lakh units for the first time and EV penetration nearing 13 per cent across India’s auto market ahead of the festive season.
India’s electric vehicle market powered into the festive season on an unprecedented high in August 2026, with retail data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) confirming record numbers across every segment — a first in the industry’s history.
Total EV penetration climbed to approximately 12.7 per cent, up sharply from 9.6 per cent a year ago, as the push from pre-festive consumer sentiment and expanded model availability converged with structural policy tailwinds.
Electric two-wheelers led the charge, crossing the 2 lakh-unit milestone for the first time, with segment share rising to 11.2 per cent — nearly double what it recorded just twelve months prior.

TVS Motor retained the top position in the electric two-wheeler segment, followed by Bajaj Auto’s Chetak platform and Ather Energy, now a publicly listed entity post its 2025 IPO.
Hero MotoCorp posted one of the strongest year-on-year growth rates among legacy players.
Electric passenger vehicle retail was up 83 per cent year-on-year, although FADA noted supply constraints on high-demand models were limiting full conversion of consumer interest to registered units.
Tata Motors retained its leadership in the electric passenger vehicle segment, with Mahindra & Mahindra consolidating its second position aggressively. MG Motor India and new entrant VinFast continued to grow volumes.
Electric commercial vehicles nearly tripled in volume, reflecting a decisive move by fleet operators from pilot programmes to active purchase orders.

The alternative fuel share — combining CNG, Hybrid, and EV — touched 40.59 per cent, just 1.09 percentage points behind petrol’s 41.68 per cent, signalling an imminent historic powertrain crossover.
India’s EV market, valued at over INR 65,000 crore annually and growing at over 24% in FY26, is entering its most consequential quarter yet as OEMs align festive launches with surging demand.
Consumer challenges persist, however. Range anxiety remains a barrier outside Tier-1 cities, while rising commercial fast-charging tariffs are gradually narrowing the total cost of ownership advantage for high-mileage daily users.

Dealer confidence for the August–October festive window was the strongest in recent history, with 87% of dealers expecting growth — the clearest signal yet that EV momentum is structural, not seasonal.
Editor’s Note
What August 2026’s FADA data truly signals is not just another record — it is the normalisation of electric mobility as a mainstream retail category across India’s entire vehicle ecosystem.
Every segment growing simultaneously is unprecedented. The more consequential shift may be the alternative fuel story.
Petrol’s near-century dominance at the dealership counter is now within touching distance of being overtaken by cleaner powertrains combined.
That crossover, when it happens, will rewrite the playbook for auto retail forecasting, dealership infrastructure planning, and OEM capital allocation.
The festive quarter now carries the weight of proving whether demand is supply-limited or organically expanding.
With EV-first showroom formats emerging — as seen in Tata’s recent multi-format retail rollout — the retail experience itself is being reimagined. India’s EV story is no longer about milestones. It is about momentum.
