Reliance Brands Ltd. would be opening the first outlet of Pret A Manger in Mumbai on 21 April 2023 according to employees of the company who have been sharing teasers on social media.
The British coffee chain entered in to a business tie-up with Reliance Retail in 2022 to bring home the iconic coffee chain to India. The new store is expected to come up at Jio World, Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai. After the first one, around 5-6 cafes are lined up across India at New Delhi, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Hyderabad as well as at a few airports.
Sinclair and Julian, friends from college opened Pret A Manger’s first outlet in London in 1986. They wanted to create handmade food, freshly prepared each day. They created the sort of food they craved but couldn’t find anywhere else.
There are an estimated 6,000 coffee shops in India and the outdoor coffee (cafe) market is estimated to be in the range of Rs. 7,000 Cr pa (USD 0.9 Bn). Starbucks and Cafe Coffee Day operate over 350 cafes all India while international brands such as Costa, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, as well as neighbourhood cafes dot the cityscape in major Indian cities as well as Tier 2/3 towns.
