Even as the state of Tamil Nadu is grappling with the hooch tragedy at Kallakurichi to which over 50 people have succumbed, Housing and Urban Development Minister of the State, Thiru. S Muthusamy, who holds the additional portfolio of the Prohibition and Excise department, said the annual sales at TASMAC, which was INR 44,121.13 crore in 2022-23 had increased to INR 45,855.67 crore in 2023-24.
Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) is a company registered under the Indian Companies Act 1956 and was established in 1983.

Owned by the State Government of Tamil Nadu, it is a one of its kind undertaking where the entire distribution and sales of alchohol within the state is managed by the Government entity and has remained a cash cow to the exchequer for decades.
Sales in FY 23-24 rose by over INR 4.70 Cr per day, translating to around INR 1 lakh per day per outlet.

The sale of liquor was INR 33,133 Cr in 2019. During the Covid-19, the then 5,500+ TASMAC store network was shut for 21 days, even as the country went on a complete lockdown.
After protests from tipplers and keeping in mind their challenges of restlessness and massive withdrawal symptoms, the then AIADMK Government reopened a few thousand such shops.

The then Government also shut down as many as 700+ stores amidst a backlash from the public, especially women at large.
There are over 40 Elite TASMAC stores across the state, which sell Indian Made Foreign Liquor as well as imported brands.

The increase in revenue during FY 23-24 was also due to the recent price hike announced by the State Government, the Minister said in the State Legislative Assembly which began it’s session on Friday 21 June 2024.
During Deepavali 2023, sales from TASMAC stood at INR 470 Cr while during Pongal 2024, it was over INR 630 Crores.
Earlier this week, over 50 died by consuming illicit liquor which was brewed and sold by a person in a small village in Kallakuruchi Dt. in Tamil Nadu.
