BYD’s second Pune showroom reveals a hub-and-spoke strategy, showing why premium EVs will thrive in India’s top cities rather than everywhere.
India sold about 1.98 lakh electric cars in FY26, up 84%, yet EVs still form only 4.3% of passenger vehicles. The country is not electrifying uniformly; select cities are.
Bengaluru and Delhi lead electric car sales, followed by Mumbai.
Southern states alone contributed nearly 46% of 2025 volumes, showing how adoption clusters around income, infrastructure and awareness.
Tata leads with about 39% share, followed by Mahindra and MG. Premium names like BYD, Tesla, BMW and Audi play differently, chasing affluent buyers in a handful of metros.

BYD’s recent momentum is real. Its India sales surged about 80% in 2025, and 49 showrooms across 40 cities now carry its Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 7 and eMAX 7.
The second Pune showroom, in Baner, is the tell. Instead of planting new flags, BYD is deepening a proven market, pairing the showroom with a service centre at Tathawade.
Premium EV buyers still worry about charging access, resale value and service reach. A visible cluster of showrooms and workshops answers these doubts better than any advertisement can.
Partners make this possible. Landmark Cars, PPS Motors and Bavaria already run multiple BYD outlets, and each cluster gives the brand local trust without heavy company-owned investment.

Premium EVs will not be a pan-India story. Their reach will stay limited, but in the top ten cities they can become genuinely popular, aspirational and well-served.
Editor’s Note
Premium EV strategy is a density game, not a distance game. Winning ten cities completely beats touching a hundred lightly.
Brands that pair showroom, service and charging within one catchment will earn the premium buyer’s confidence first. Confidence, not discounts, converts a curious visitor into a loyal owner.
Dealer groups with local goodwill will become the real moat. The brand that nurtures them well will outlast rivals who only chase headline outlet counts.

As incomes rise and charging matures, today’s select cities will seed tomorrow’s next wave. India’s EV journey will unfold city by city, and the road looks bright.
