Swiggy, the most recent poster boy of the Indian startup ecosystem has announced right after its IPO, that it’s experimental “Bolt” service will now be available across 400+ cities in India. Through the “Bolt” service, Swiggy will serve fresh and hot food that requires minimal or zero preparation time from nearby restaurants and outlets.

Bolt has tied up with more than 40,000 restaurants with a range of over 10 Lakh items to choose from.

Launched initially in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune, Bolt is now active not only in emerging hubs such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Indore, Coimbatore, and Kochi, but also in Tier 2 and 3 cities such as Roorkie, Guntur, Warangal, Patna, Jagtial, Solan, Nashik, Shillong amongst others.

Rohit Kapoor, CEO of Swiggy’s Food Marketplace, said, “Bolt is changing the way customers are experiencing food. For the first time, people are getting food from their favourite restaurants to their doorstep, as fresh as possible.

Idlis come warm and fluffy, ice creams stay frozen, and even fries are crispy right out of the package. With all the customers love we’ve received so far as well as the growing excitement from both national and local restaurants, expanding Bolt was an easy decision.

We’re thrilled to bring this experience to even more cities and homes.”

According to Swiggy, cities from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have witnessed the highest adoption for Bolt followed by Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Punjab.

Swiggy has decided to offer “Bolt” services only within a 2 kms radius and the delivery partners do no get incentivised for these services.

Typically, categories of food such as Burgers, Snacks, Bakery items, beverages, Sweets and Ice Cream are items that would be under the “Bolt” category.

International and Indian brands such as Chaayos, EatFit, Burger King, Baskin Robbins, Starbucks as well as local favourites such as Bhartiya Jalpan and Anand Sweets from Bengaluru, Irani Cafe in Pune, Kookie Jar in Kolkata, Karachi Bakery and Pulla reddy from Hyderabad, Gwalia Sweets in Ahmedabad have tied up for the “Bolt” offering.

Editor’s Note

Yet again, Indian startups are solving a problem which never existed. Until 2019, it was pizzas that were being delivered within 30 mins and in select localities where chains like Pizza Hut and Dominos had the ability for a quick delivery.

After the Covid-19 lockdown was lifted, quick commerce made its way into Indian households, which was amplified by 20-something founders who launched Zepto in 2021.

No one really craves for something to munch in 10-mins. But the likes of Swiggy have created a fantastic business model in India by not just creating innovating problem statements but also by solving them efficiently.

We live in times where medicines, especially critical ailment ones such as for Diabetes, Heart problems, Insulin syringes and depressants, etc. take more time than junk food that get delivered in 10 mins! Interesting times that we live in…
