Editor’s Note

Shoppers Stop is competing with the likes of Nykaa and Tira by Reliance Retail in the hyper-competitive beauty products market in India.

With almost half the Indian population of 140 Crore people under the age of 35 years, the market opportunity for cosmetics, dermatological products, skin care, fashion and beauty products is swelling by the day.

Nykaa, for instance started off as an online platform offering affordable products but has managed to open 100s offline stores where consumers can come and explore the products in person.

Many such stores also offer experiential illustrations to customers to encourage them to buy cosmetic products instantly.

Health & Glow was a pioneer in this space in the early 2000s but lost out on the opportunity to scale as the country was not ready back then for this category.

Beyond price and affordability, it is the quality of the products, especially the long term effects on the skin, which will be a game changer for the beauty brands in India.
