Birkenstock entered India in 2021 in association with the Seva Group and has hence become a favourite for India’s elite over the last few years. Prior to this, the brand had begun its India journey in 2019, through the brand’s micro-website.
The Germany based parent company, which opened its first mono-brand store in 2024, has now opened its 50th store as well in Mumbai.

The 1,100 sq ft store has come up at Phoenix Palladium Mall in Mumbai.
The new store will reflect the brand’s global identity – clean, minimal and rooted in craftsmanship.
The store will host its extensive product range, including seasonal icons, classics, new silhouettes and its premium 1774 line.

Birkenstock operates across 27 Indian cities including in Gurugram, New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Pune, Mumbai, Guwahati, Chennai, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram among others.
Since entering the Indian market, Birkenstock has grown rapidly, making India one of its most expansive global retail markets and a key growth driver in the APAC region.
Birkenstock is planning to open 5-7 new stores this financial year and is expected to consolidate its position as a premier footwear brand in the country.

Editor’s Note
Birkenstock was founded in 1774 and continues to be privately held, with the sixth generation currently running the company quite successfully, with a presence across 90 countries.
Birkenstock invented the footbed and has also shaped the meaning of the term “footbed“- a unique, revolutionary product concept that has paved the way for a completely new market.
The Indian footwear market is estimated to be INR 15,491 Cr (USD 18 Bn) and is expected to grow 1.5x to INR 39,588 Cr (USD 46 Bn) by 2033.
