In a major relief to scores of movie-goers in the state, the Karnataka Government has announced that the upper price of ticktets at cinema theatres across the state will now be capped at INR 200 plus applicable GST.
The move comes ahead of the biggest festive season in the state – the 10 day Dassera event which coincids with mega celebrations at Mysore, as well as celebrated with fanfare by the larger population, making it the state’s largest Social Festival.

The new pricing has been executed in acccordance with the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendent) Rules 2025 and ccomes with immediate effect.
The Government has provided a small exemption though – mmultiplexes with less than 75 seats or less, which offer premium facilities.

Theatre owners are in a fix. The rate rationalisation in Karnataka is in line with similar capping of ticket prices in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Interestingly, the three Southern states, along with Telangana have the most number of single-screens, owned by families and individuals.

Corporates like PVR-INOX have committed significant investments in Southern India, the new pricing rules could throw a spannner in their ambitious growth plans.
Editor’s Note
Post Covid-19 pandemic, the behaviour of movie-goers have changed significantly.

While a large section of the audience are consuming more movies and wel series now, it is all on a smaller screen and extremely personalised.
The rise of usage of Apps like Jio Hotstar Amazon Prime, Zee5 and SonyPix has pushed the audience away from theatres, especialaly due to steep prices of movie tickets, food and snacks.

With a family outing for a movie becoming almost unaffordable on a regular basis, crowds are drawn only for movies produced on large budgets or those featuring top stars.
