Apple will earn more by selling an iPhone cover than the USD 7.90 profit per passenger that airlines will make in CY 2026, IATA chief Willie Walsh said.
“Industry-level margins are still a pittance considering the value that airlines create by connecting people and economies. They stand at the core of a value chain that underpins nearly 4 per cent of the global economy and supports 87 million jobs.

“Yet Apple will earn more selling an iPhone cover than the $7.90 airlines will make transporting the average passenger,” Walsh, the Director General of IATA, said.
For the fiscal 2025, Apple reported its highest ever revenues of USD 416 Bn, up from USD 391 Bn in the same period in 2024.

The phenomenal growth in revenues was launched by new product launches such as the iPhone 17 series, with the iPhone 17 PRO gaining the most relevance among creators, social media influencers and ardent Apple aficionados.
Editor’s Note
The context of this comparison by the Chief of IATA is how stressed the Airline Industry is, globally.
Revenue per seat has been on a decline over the years, especially after the Covid-19 led crisis.
Travellers have not only found different modes of travel, but have also reduced their dependence on air travel due to higher cost of holidaying.

The Apple Accessories business globally was estimated at USD 28 Bn, with the size growing to USD 52 Bn by 2032, according to Yahoo! Finance.
