Airport Retail has not taken off in India. Wonder why?

Joining Mumbai and Goa, Delhi’s National Capital Region (NCR) will have its second airport operational in a couple of weeks.

NIA – Noida International Airport, owned by Zurich Airport and UP Government in a PPP model, the greenfield airport at Jewar, 50 kms from IGI Airport will start commercial domestic aviation operations, now that it has secured aerodrome and mandatory security clearances.

Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the nodal agency that offers security clearances for privately managed airports has given the final security clearance to NIA.

Christoph Schnellmann, Chief Executive Officer of Noida International Airport, said “Receiving the aerodrome licence is a key milestone in our journey. It reflects the strong collaboration with our partners and the rigorous work undertaken to ensure readiness for commercial operations”.

Once the Aerodrome Security Programme by BCAS is cleared, NIA plan the formal inauguration and commencement of commercial operations of the new airport.

Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) was established for the development, construction and operation of the greenfield project – the Noida International Airport.

The company, a 100% subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, is responsible for the implementation of the public-private partnership project in close partnership with the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Government of India.

The concession period for Noida International Airport commenced in 2021, and will run for 40 years.

The airport will offer a large retail area, spread over 1 lakh sq ft inside and outside the passenger terminal buildings which operate domestic and international flights.

Editor’s Note

Noida International Airport connects the greater Delhi area and Western Uttar Pradesh with other cities in India and the world.

The airport combines Swiss efficiency and Indian hospitality to offer rich experiences and comprehensive commercial attractions and services to its passengers.

The airport features one runway and one passenger terminal with a capacity to serve 12 million passengers annually.

The airport‘s masterplan provides for further development over the duration of the concession to serve over 70 million passengers annually.
