A Decade of Disruption: How UPI Became the World’s Most Powerful Payments Platform

25 August 2026, marks exactly ten years since UPI launched — a decade that quietly and permanently rewired how 1.4 billion Indians transact.

Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India under the Reserve Bank of India’s oversight, United Payments Interface went live with just 21 participating banks aboard.

In its debut month, the platform processed approximately 90,000 transactions — a figure that today barely represents a fraction of a single minute’s traffic on the network.

Annual transaction volume has surged from 1.78 crore in FY 2016-17 to over 24,162 crore in FY 2025-26 — a nearly 13,000-fold rise, compounding at a CAGR of 188%.

Transaction value followed an equally spectacular arc — from INR 0.07 lakh crore in its first operational year to approximately INR 314 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, a more than 4,000-fold increase.

The platform now handles over 66 crore transactions daily, with July 2026 recording 2,366 crore transactions — the highest monthly volume in UPI’s decade-long journey.

Institutional participation has grown commensurately — from 44 banks in FY 2016-17 to 703 banks by FY 2025-26, with the live count now reaching 731 institutions.

UPI commands an 84% share of India’s digital payments landscape and accounts for 49% of global real-time payment volumes — a statistic that demands international attention.

Cross-border acceptance now spans 11 countries.

PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm together process 87.93% of domestic volumes, with PhonePe leading at over 10,483 crore monthly transactions.

Perhaps the most revealing statistic: 86% of all UPI transactions fall in the <INR 100-500 range.

This is not digital banking for the elite. This is mass commerce, fully democratised.

Editor’s Note

UPI did not merely change how India pays. It changed who could participate in organised commerce — and that, in the retail context, is the more consequential story.

A kirana owner in Tier 4 India who once struggled to access any POS infrastructure now accepts payments seamlessly. The infrastructure did its job rather well.

Whether every retailer built meaningfully on that advantage is, of course, an entirely different conversation — and a somewhat uncomfortable one.
