As AI becomes India’s newest shopping companion, the arrival of ads inside ChatGPT and Gemini signals a seismic shift in how brands will compete for the connected consumer’s attention.
India’s retail landscape is undergoing a quiet but seismic transformation. The shopping companion of choice for millions of Indian consumers is no longer a friend, family member, or sales executive.
It is an AI.
A new generation of digital-first Indian shoppers — led by a 220-million-strong Gen Z cohort — is increasingly turning to AI-powered platforms for purchase decisions, product discovery, and brand validation.
The Google-Deloitte report, The $250 Billion Commerce Frontier, projects India’s e-commerce market will triple from $90 billion today to $250 billion by 2030.

The report identifies four forces — Inspired, Intelligent, Instant, and Immersive — driving this shift.
Nearly two-thirds of Gen Z and millennial consumers now prefer generative AI platforms over traditional search engines for product recommendations, according to Capgemini Research Institute’s 2025 consumer trends study.
This preference is rapidly reshaping the discovery-to-purchase funnel.
Consumers describe a need; AI assembles options, validates reviews, and nudges the transaction — all within a single conversation window.
Into this charged landscape arrives a development that should make every Indian retailer and FMCG marketer pay close attention.
OpenAI began showing ads to free-tier and ChatGPT Go users in the United States on February 9, 2026, and opened a self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager to businesses in May 2026.

ChatGPT Ads has since expanded to the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea, with OpenAI continuing to scale across more markets through 2026.
Google’s Gemini, backed by the world’s most powerful advertising machinery, is widely expected to follow with a commerce-integrated ad model of its own — one that could dovetail neatly with Shopping, YouTube, and Maps.
Separately, content creators are projected to influence 30% of total retail spend in India by 2030, with one in ten online purchases directly attributable to a creator storefront.
The confluence of AI-guided discovery and AI-embedded advertising will fundamentally redefine the shopper journey — and consequently, how brands invest in consumer communication.
For Indian retail and FMCG, the question is no longer whether AI matters. It is whether the industry is ready to show up where the shopper is already having the conversation.

Editor’s Note
For decades, Indian retailers obsessed over footfalls, shelf-eye levels, and the science of the planogram.
Then came e-commerce, and we debated search rankings and banner ads.
Now, the consumer is literally talking to a machine and asking it what to buy — and the machine is beginning to talk back on behalf of brands.
The irony, of course, is delicious.

An industry that spent years trying to decode the Indian shopper’s mind now faces a future where an algorithm already knows it — and is monetising that knowledge, one contextual ad at a time.
The shopping buddy has arrived. The question is: whose side is it really on?
