Shoppers Stop Q2 FY27 results show how premiumisation, loyalty and inventory discipline turned PAT positive and set the department store towards a debt-free balance sheet.
India’s apparel market, estimated by CareEdge at INR 9 lakh crore in FY25, is heading towards INR 16 lakh crore by FY30, rewarding retailers who earn consumer trust.
Department stores compete here with Lifestyle, Pantaloons, Westside and Max, each chasing the same aspirational shopper across fashion, beauty and home.
Shoppers Stop’s Q2 FY27 shows premiumisation paying off: PAT turned positive at INR 6 crore versus a loss of INR 7 crore, while EBITDA rose 56% to INR 43 crore.
Kavindra Mishra, MD and CEO, Shoppers Stop, said in its results release, “Our continued focus on premiumization, experiential retail, inventory discipline and operational excellence is resonating well with customers and strengthening the quality of growth.”

Premium brands now contribute 73% of sales, up 390 basis points, while beauty grew 18% to INR 367 crore, led by fragrance, up 35%.
He added, “The demand momentum witnessed in Q1 sustained through Q2, supported by encouraging consumer sentiment and healthy traction during Rakshabandhan and Onam.”
Loyalty is the quiet engine. First Citizen’s 14 million members contribute 84% of sales, while Black Card, with record 40,000 enrolments, alone drives 22%.
Discipline helped too. Outright inventory fell INR 78 crore year on year, net debt dropped INR 82 crore, and the company expects to be debt free by Q3 FY27.

Challenges are real. The festive season shifted largely to Q3, department format sales grew 4% (7% festive-adjusted), and the value format INTUNE is still narrowing losses.
S. Shriram, CEO & Founder, Miles2Go Consulting Services, said, “Department stores win when they stop chasing footfall and start earning wallet share. The premium mix and loyal members show how.”
Editor’s Note
Premiumisation works when earned through proof, not price tags. Shoppers Stop anchors growth in a loyal member base that tells it what to stock and whom to serve.
The bigger lesson is sequencing: fix inventory, cut debt, then expand. Operating leverage follows when stores, brands, loyalty and balance sheet move together.

With a debt-free balance sheet in sight and the festive quarter ahead, Shoppers Stop may well be entering its most confident chapter yet, built on trust.
