PVR Inox Q2: Record Profit, Lagging Footfalls

PVR Inox Q2 FY27 results reveal record profit, margin gains and a buyback, yet footfall and growth gaps hold insights for India's cinema retail.

Indian cinema just crossed a milestone: Q2 FY27 became the first quarter to cross INR 4,000 crore in gross box office, reaching INR 4,443 crore, up 23%.

Hollywood powered much of this, surging 87% to INR 1,024 crore, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day becoming India’s highest-grossing English film at INR 608 crore.

PVR Inox, Cinepolis and Miraj compete with thousands of single screens, and this quarter’s mass-market hits found their strongest audiences in exactly those single screens.

PVR Inox posted its best quarter ever, with profit after tax of INR 263 crore, up 149%, on revenue of INR 2,105 crore, up 17%.

The first hit is efficiency. EBITDA margin expanded to 22%, above the pre-COVID 17-18%, even though occupancy of 30% still sits below FY20 levels.

The second hit is balance sheet strength. The company completed its maiden INR 303 crore buyback and turned net cash positive, a reversal from the INR 12 crore loss in Q2 FY25.

The first miss is growth. Revenue rose 17% against industry box office growth of 23%, as mass-market films favoured single screens over premium multiplexes.

The second miss is volume. Footfalls rose just 4% to 46 million, so ticket pricing and food and beverage sales, up 18%, did the heavy lifting.

Consumers remain selective. They pay a premium for spectacle but wait for streaming on everything else, which keeps occupancy the quarter’s quiet challenge.

Hopefully, asset-light smart cinemas for tier 3 and 4 cities, alongside 90-100 new screens planned this fiscal, will bring fresh audiences beyond the metros.

Editor’s Note

Cinema’s recovery is no longer about hits alone. It is about how well an exhibitor converts any content cycle into cash.

Single screens won this quarter’s mass films, so the multiplex answer lies in format, price points and small-town reach, not bigger metro auditoriums.

Every retailer can borrow this lesson: margin discipline beats footfall chasing. If PVR Inox keeps balancing content, geography and experience, the next blockbuster quarter may arrive sooner than expected.
