Tamil Nadu's six-show Deepavali order opens a 6 am breakfast and lunch window for theatres, malls and restaurants, turning extra screenings into food and beverage growth.
India’s cinemas grossed Rs 13,395.00 crore in 2025, a record, with Tamil films holding 15% of first-half collections. Tamil Nadu runs about 1,112 screens.
Since 3 November, theatres may run six shows daily for a new Tamil film’s first week, from 6 am to 2.30 am, plus weekends and festivals.
Key players include PVR INOX with over 140 Tamil Nadu screens, Miraj Cinemas with nine, and single-screen operators whose halls keep closing statewide.
S. Shriram, Consumer Behaviour expert and CEO and Founder of Miles2Go Consulting Services, said, “A 6 am show turns moviegoers into breakfast customers; late-morning shows turn them into lunch customers.”

“Malls gain most, with food courts, apparel and gaming sharing the crowd, while standalone restaurants beside single screens get a dependable morning rush,” he added.
PVR INOX’s food spend per head hit Rs 165 in Q4 FY26, up 32%, while food sales grew 33%.
The June quarter extended that: spend per head reached Rs 161 against Rs 148 a year earlier, with occupancy rising from 22% to 25%.
A 200-seat screen at 50% occupancy gains 200 patrons daily from two shows beyond the earlier four, worth about Rs 2.25 lakh weekly at Rs 161 per head.
Challenges remain: discounted tickets cut PVR INOX’s spend per head 1% in the September 2025 quarter, and 6 am crowds demand disciplined staffing and safety.

With Deepavali crowds arriving at dawn, hungry and festive, theatres, malls and neighbourhood restaurants can turn one release into a full day out.
Editor’s Note
Exhibitors have long sold tickets and treated popcorn as a side dish. Tamil Nadu’s six-show window makes the dining table the real box office.
Dayparting is the lever: a breakfast combo at 6 am, a thali before noon, and a coffee-dessert bundle after the late show.
Single-screen owners can pre-book meal-and-movie passes with neighbouring restaurants, because footfall without a menu is opportunity left on the table.

Execute this well and Deepavali 2026 becomes the playbook for Pongal, with every screen a morning destination.
