Editor’s Note
When McDonalds entered India in the early 90s, burger as a snack was a temptation, an expensive one at that.
The country was already familiar with the snack in the form of a Vada-Pav, but what built the liking for burgers was exactly the opposite – the french fries freshly prepared at the outlets, along with a delectable fare of other food items and the store ambience and customer experience.
Since the 2020s, several international Burger Chains have entered as well well as Indian cafe chains have been offering the snack too.

Add to this, local snacking outlets and neighbourhood cafes too offer burger at throw-away prices, which drive foot traffic regularly to these outlets.
Operating a chain of Burger outlets, especially maintaining world-class F&B standards and to be hugely profitable, is not easy. Needless to say, while the business seems lucrative, the bottomline isn’t (yet) for most of them.
