In a grand ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on 22 March, 2023, Aditya Birla Group’s Chairman , Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla, was honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan award by Honourable President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu. The award is a testimony to his remarkable journey as an industrialist, businessman, and philanthropist.
On this momentous occasion, Mr. Birla said, “The spirit of nation-building and trusteeship has guided my family across generations. And so, to receive this national honour is indeed humbling. I thank the Honourable President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu and the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, for this prestigious honour which I accept on behalf of my 140,000 colleagues from 36 countries. This award is a recognition of the longitudinal impact of the Aditya Birla Group — in enriching lives and in demonstrating through actions that business is a force for good.”
Aditya Birla Group is among the foremost in the Indian Retail Industry. In the late 90s, the company laumched Peter England, one of the earliest branded shirts and trousers in the mass market when most of Indian men used to buy shirt and trouser material and get them stitched with neighbourhood tailors. Allen Solly, Louis Phillippe and Van Heusen were launched as premium clothing brands for men, which became an instant hit. The Company has a network of 3,848 stores across approximately 32,589 multi-brand outlets with 6,048 point of sales in department stores across India (as on 31st December 2022). In addition, to cater to the needs of digitally native consumers, ABFRL is also building a portfolio of Digital-first brands under its technology led ‘House of D2C Brands’ venture TMRW. TMRW is on a path to building a portfolio of Digital First brands in partnership with founders of emerging brands in the E-Commerce market.

In 2008, the company launched More supermarkets and hypermarkets. The loss making business was acquired in 2018 by Amazon and Samara Private Equity Fund. In 2012, the company acquired Pantaloons, the Department store chain from The Future Group by issuing debentures worth Rs. 800 crore at mutually agreed terms and taking on debt of Rs. 800 crore.
The company has long term exclusive partnerships with select brands such as Ralph Lauren, Hackett London, Simon Carter, Ted Baker, Fred Perry, Forever 21, American Eagle and Reebok. The Company’s foray into branded ethnic wear business includes brands such as Jaypore, Tasva & Marigold Lane. ABFRL has strategic partnerships with Designers ‘Shantanu & Nikhil’, ‘Tarun Tahiliani’, ‘Sabyasachi’ and ‘House of Masaba’.
For Q3 FY 22-23, the company had a turnover of Rs, 3,615 Cr growing 17% YoY and for 9M FY 22-23, the company had a turnover of Rs. 9,618 Cr growing 20% YoY.
