BIRKENSTOCK is the inventor of the footbed and is committed to a clear purpose: foot health since the company’s shoemaking tradition that can be traced back to 1774.
The brand has historically been associated mainly with sandals. But closed shoes are not just an addition to its story, rather they are where it began.
Long before the sandal became iconic, Carl Birkenstock developed the concept of the “Idealschuh”, a closed shoe built around the principle of anatomical support.

The brand is now expanding its closed-shoe portfolio, from sneakers to boots and moc-toe silhouettes, strengthening its position as a year-round footwear brand.
The numbers reflect this trajectory.

In the first quarter of FY 25-26, closed styles accounted for approximately 60% of its revenues, reflecting the increasing balance of its portfolio across seasons.
With the launch of the HIGHWOOD MOC LACE LOW, a modern moc-toe silhouette building on the functional DNA of the HIGHWOOD boot, BIRKENSTOCK continues to broaden its portfolio.

Editor’s Note
Back to basics. That’s what we would say about BIRKENSTOCK’s latest approach towards closed footwear.
Deeply rooted in orthopedics, the brand stands for superior functionality, a strong commitment to its craftsmanship, uncompromising quality and the promise of an ultimate product experience.

With 6,200+ employees worldwide, this traditional, the 6th-gen family-run business is also one of the German footwear industry’s biggest employers.
Manufactured in Germany, BIRKENSTOCK products are sold in more than 100 countries globally reporting revenues of EUR 2 Bn and a net profit of EUR 348 Mn.
